About Me

I love photographing wild things . . . and urban things . . . both the ordinary and the magnificent . . . the visions and experiences that paint my world.

Born in the States to Latvian parents, and formed through my early years in Europe, I’m a gypsy at heart. My parents bought me my first camera on my fifth birthday — a Kodak Instamatic. A pocket Instamatic got me through my teen years until I picked up my first cherished SLR — a Fujica AX-1.

I write and research as a freelancer. I also had a regular gig, editing the San Francisco site for About.com from 2007 to 2009 — covering and photographing local events, destinations, and issues. I volunteer at a wildlife hospital on the side.

I’m geeky about life on this planet, a sensibility that forms the content of this blog. My most vivid moments involve some earthly occurrence that leaves me awestruck . . . like watching thousands of tundra swans flood the sky at daybreak . . . sitting in silent symbiosis with a herd of elk under falling snow . . . watching the Aurora Borealis from the cockpit of a 747, as a kid. (Of course, I can’t deny the magic of a Mac computer, of a John Cassavetes film, or a night with Don Julio.)

Photo Methodology

With all of my photos, I do my best to abide by a set of nature photography ethics. I posted about my wildlife photography pet peeves here. Almost all of my wildlife images are shot with natural light only, no flash. I photograph my animal images in the wild, in the animal’s natural habitat. Any pictures of captive animals (rehabilitation facilities, animal parks, etc.) are indicated as “captive” in the photo description.

If you’d like to use one of my images, please email me — or check out Using Photos and Content for additional info. I keep a selection of my photos at my Flickr page — under a Creative Commons attribution license.

Enjoy your browsings and drop me a line if you have any comments or need more information. Thanks for stopping by!
