Squirrels are so pervasive they’re unexceptional to a lot of photographers. But I have squirrels to thank for not being utterly demoralized. Even when the wildlife shots are fleeting, generally, I can count on a squirrel to give me a good pose.
When I offload that rare tern, flying out of frame with the just the left wing in focus — or the once-in-a-lifetime sighting where I forgot to adjust my exposure compensation and whole animal is a halo — I can fall back on my Squirrel of the Day shot to rescue my fragile sense of worth.
This was a capture taken at Eastshore State Park in Albany that had a hidden visual element: it wasn’t until l got home and viewed her on the Mac screen that I saw the red mug and paws. I worried at first it was an injury. But closer scrutiny revealed more of a wine color from, I’m guessing, a recent meal of berries.
